Coral Gables

Homes & Condos

When George Merrick founded Coral Gables in 1925, he predicted the city would become an international mecca and a gateway to Latin America. Today Coral Gables’ proximity to the Miami International Airport, the Port of Miami, and Downtown Miami has made it home to a number of foreign consulates, as well as more than 140 multinational corporations, including Bacardi and Del Monte. The University of Miami also attracts a steady flow of international intellectuals. “Miracle Mile” runs through the center of Coral Gables’ downtown business district, offering curbside seating at classic cafes as well as world-renowned bridal boutiques. With a plethora of public parks, historical landmarks, golf courses, and cultural gems, Coral Gables is a dynamic place to call home.

In the suburban setting of Coral Gables, single-family homes are the primary real estate, though there are a few opportunities for condos and townhomes closer to Downtown. Most homes sit on quiet, tree-lined streets and boast big backyards and pools. In the southern part of the city, the real estate becomes slightly more exclusive, with gated communities like Gables Estates, Journey’s End, Old Cutler Bay, Snapper Creek Lakes, Hammock Lakes, and Cocoplum. A dream for boaters, several of these communities offer waterfront views and docks that can accommodate yachts up to 100 feet long. The architecture of Coral Gables pays homage to the tastes of city founder Merrick, who admired Spanish and Mediterranean architecture. Both the Coral Gables and Riviera Country Clubs offer exclusive access to gyms, pools, restaurants, and member-only events.

Coral Gables

History

The City of Coral Gables, which was incorporated in 1925, used to be an orange grove. Merrick, a real estate developer, inherited the land from his father, who had moved the family from New England to Florida during the land boom. Following the philosophy of the City Beautiful Movement, Merrick built one of the nation’s first planned communities. Inspired by his travels to Mexico and Central America, Merrick saw the Gables—with its white coral rock, palm trees, and tropical flowers—as a natural setting for Spanish architecture. In the same year as the city’s incorporation, Merrick donated land to make way for the University of Miami, which today is the largest employer in the city.

Mediterranean Revival homes honor Merrick’s vision, as do cultural and historical gems like the Venetian Pool, originally carved out of a coral rock quarry and opened as a public pool in 1924. Visitors still pour in to see the grand waterfall and the grotto and to splash in the pool’s blue-green waters. Less than a mile away is the famed Biltmore Hotel—another Merrick construction—with a 23,000 square- foot pool, private cabanas, a renowned 18-hole golf course, and plenty of old Florida charm.

Attractions

merrick parkIn addition to being named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Foundation, Coral Gables is the proud home of the national treasure that is the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

Named for the famous plant explorer, David Fairchild, who retired to Miami, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden opened its 83 acres of tropical plants to the public in 1938. Today the garden hosts frequent festivals and concerts and is a perfect place for a stroll on a Saturday afternoon.

Lush landscaping defines Coral Gables. Twenty-two parks, including seven playgrounds and 33 public tennis courts, offer outdoorsy residents plenty of options. For spectators and sports enthusiasts, the Miami Hurricanes play throughout the school year. The University also provides the community access to lectures and performances and is home to the Lowe Art Museum.

For more indoor recreation, Coral Gables has an incredible independent bookstore, Books & Books, which hosts nightly literary talks. Across the street, an art house cinema screens independent films. For more shopping, you can take the trolley down Ponce de Leon Boulevard to the Shops at Merrick Park, a mixed-use residential and business center, which houses a mall with major retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom’s, Tiffany’s, Burberry, and Gucci.
